LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:
Just one overt theme entry last week, but its clue was suggestive: [Term I coined in “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Crossword Puzzles & Word Games” for a certain trick involving the first letter of a crossword clue] it read, and right across the middle of the grid we got MASKED CAPITAL. You know those sneaky things, where the capitalization of the first letter in the clue conceals the fact that it’s a proper noun.
Seven of these lurked symmetrically in the grid. From top to bottom they were:
17-A [Supreme being] – DIANA ROSS, referencing her famous Motown group the Supremes.
25-A [United front] = COCKPIT, talking here about United Airlines.
27-A [Rice paper] = THESIS, talking here about Rice University.
29-D [Goofy place] = EPCOT, meaning Goofy the Disney character.
43-A [Earl with high legal ranking] = WARREN, not a nobleman but rather the former chief justice.
47-A [Oracle man] = ELLISON, not a Greek soothsayer but rather a reference to Oracle the software company and its founder, Larry.
55-A [Nice food] = CASSOULET, Nice being the city in southern France.
String those masked capital letters together (they’re emboldened above) and they spell out the profession we were looking for, meta answer SURGEON, (appropriate since a surgeon, like these 7 letters, also wears a mask).

Meaning him, whose name lives on as a brand of mouthwash (which I happen to use).
