LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:

“You must figure out this week’s instructions for yourself,” read last week’s not-very-helpful prompt. Just one obvious themer from entry lengths, the 13-letter central MONOSYLLABLES, clued as [“Cat,” “hat,” and “strengths,” for example].

What to do with that? Several possibilities, but the right one turned out to be using the 11 monosyllabic clues:

[Sub] = HERO
[Mitt] = GLOVE
[“The ___”] =OMEN
[Lodge] = INN
[“Ick!”] = GROSS
[All] = FULLY
[Five] = QUINTET
[Let] = ALLOW
[___ Turk] = YOUNG
[Un-] = NON
[___ tree] = PEAR

Sound those out and you’ve got “Submit the logical five-letter country.” The only five-letter, monosyllablic country is SPAIN, found by 233 solvers.

This week’s winner, whose name was chosen at random from among the 233 correct entries received, is Stephen Williams of Holbrook, Mass. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, Stephen will also receive a 1-year subscription to Matt Gaffney’s Daily Crossword.

THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:

What famous 1960s movie is hinted at by this puzzle’s theme?

Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
