How often are new contest puzzles posted?
Every Friday afternoon.
What’s the deadline for me to enter the contest each week?
Entries must be submitted by noon Eastern time on the Tuesday following a puzzle’s posting.
How do I enter the contest?
Each week’s puzzle will contain a sort of puzzle-within-a-puzzle (or “metapuzzle”) that you have to figure out once you solve the crossword. The answer to this metapuzzle will be that week’s contest answer word, and it is this word (or series of words) you must submit to enter the contest. Be sure to read the instructions that come with each week’s puzzle, as they will explain how to arrive at this contest answer word(s).
You can submit your entry using the form on the left-hand side of the page.
How many entries may I submit per week?
Each solver is allowed just one entry per week.
How do I print out the puzzle?
Click on the puzzle image and hit “print” on your browser.
Can I get the puzzle via e-mail?
Yes, join my Google Group at groups.google.com/group/mgwcc. Across Lite versions of all puzzles will be posted there each Friday afternoon (and e-mailed to group subscribers once they’re posted).
What prizes can I win?
You can win both weekly and monthly prizes here at MGWCC. WEEKLY: Each week a winner is drawn at random from all solvers who have submitted the correct contest answer for that week. The weekly winner receives an autographed copy of any book written by Matt. MONTHLY: Contestants who submit correct answers for all 4 or 5 crosswords in a calendar month are eligible to win a MGWCC pen, pencil and notepad set. Ten winners will be randomly selected at the end of each month from that group of solvers.
How difficult are these puzzles?
MGWCC puzzles get more difficult as the month progresses. The first puzzle in a calendar month will be about the level of a Monday New York Times crossword, while the last puzzle in the month is at the level of a Saturday Times (or harder).
Where and when are a puzzle’s answers posted?
Answers and a full writeup of each puzzle are posted the following Friday here on the blog. But you don’t have to wait until Friday — each Tuesday at 12 noon ET, just as the contest deadline passes, Joon Pahk writes an entertaining summary of the previous Friday’s MGWCC at crosswordfiend.com.
