LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:
Title: “Bowl Games”
Instructions: This week’s contest answer is a well-known breakfast cereal.
Answer: ALPHA-BITS
Six wacky theme entries:
17-A [Buckets stuffed with bills on the beach at Phuket?] = BAHT PAILS
36-A [Garden trail marked by plants of a certain herb?] = BASIL PATH
41-A [What each nun wears in “The Sound of Music”?] = ALPS HABIT
60-A [Where scientists put the embers from their campfire?] = LAB ASHPIT
11-D [That old “We’re having gyros yet again?” feeling?] = PITA BLAHS
35-D [Volcanic rock that everyone’s using in their kitchens these days?] = HIP BASALT
Each of those anagrams to contest answer ALPHA-BITS, fitting since you could anagram each of these right in a bowl of Alpha-Bits at breakfast. Assuming you were patient and picked the right nine letters out of the box. I don’t recall if they use proper natural language letter frequency in Alpha-Bits but I’m guessing not, so you’d probably need a little patience to pull it off.
Also, Francis Heaney recently pointed out to me that the hyphen on the Alpha-Bits box is on the second line, before the B, which is quite weird.
This week’s winner, whose name was chosen at random from the 611 correct answers, is Paula Markowitz Wittlin of Mamaroneck, N.Y. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, Paula will also receive a signed copy of my book Pint-Size Crosswords.
