Brief writeup for now: each of the six starred entries concealed a very common three-letter adjective. Crossing those adjectives on a down entry was a noun described by that adjective. The one letter unused in those six downs was always the top letter, and the six top letters spelled out contest answer TOP HAT. Those six letters look like little hats (I hoped).
