LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:
Postseason time for the baseball fans out there! And there are a lot of you, judging from comments.
Which still-alive-in-October team did last week’s puzzle point to? Our theme entries were:
17-A [Subtitle of a 1980 John Lennon classic] = DARLING BOY. The song is “Beautiful Boy” which he wrote for his son Sean Ono Lennon, who I saw in Charlottesville a few months ago when he opened for Beck.
25-A [Square in Venezia] = PIAZZA SAN MARCO.
42-A [Hit off Deana Carter’s “Did I Shave My Legs for This?”] = STRAWBERRY WINE. Great voice but cheesy song. Wine and cheese, though, that’s good.
55-A [Textbook publisher] = MCGRAW-HILL.
Each of these starts with a famous ballplayer: Ron Darling, Mike Piazza, Darryl Strawberry, and Tug McGraw, each of whom did an iconic stint with meta answer the NEW YORK METS, found by 491 solvers.
Jrodrippe laments:
Ugh I feel so dirty typing that as a Phillies fan.
Similarly, mdf:
My first chance to do a Meta in quite a while and its cruel for a Nats fan
Geoff M. says:
You couldn’t pick the Yankees?!
cor goes old school:
I grew up across the street from Ebbet’s field in the apartment house behind the right field wall in Rockwell’s painting
Meet the Metas! Meet the Metas! Head for the park and greet the Metas!
And finally, Lorraine (and many others) writes:
ya gotta believe!!
This week’s winner, whose name was chosen at random from the 491 correct entries received, is Aaron L. of Middletown, Conn. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil and notepad set, Aaron will also receive a 1-year subscription to a special project of mine which I will write about here next week!
MULLER MUSIC META, OCTOBER:
Only 17 solvers (I am one!) have gotten the Muller Meta this month! It’s very nice, and the toughest of the year by far. Deadline is Sunday night at 11 ET. Try it if you dare.
NEW FREESTYLE:
Kameron Austin Collins has a new free-of-charge freestyle (themeless) starting next week, with puzzles running on the 1st and 15th of every month. Do what I did and sign up here!
THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:
This week’s contest answer is a U.S. state capital that fits this puzzle’s theme pattern. NOTE: Be careful! This meta has only one correct answer, though it may appear to have several at first glance.
