LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:
Tough Week 1: just 445 solvers found CATS as the musical hiding in last week’s grid. Each of the long theme entries concealed a sound that cats make:
17-a [No longer idle] = SPURRED TO ACTION
24-a [Goal of a mortgage] = HOMEOWNERSHIP
40-a [Get taller fast] = GROW LIKE A WEED
53-a [Without delay] = RIGHT THIS SECOND
Concealing PURR, MEOW, GROWL and HISS. Sounds like this could only mean Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS.
Jeff Louie writes:
I’m still growling and hissing from last week.
Evan asks:
Where’s the theme entry that hides CHASE NOTHING, which my cat does at least 50 times a day?
Magoo is back solving MGWCC after a hiatus:
A-mew-sing enough purrhaps, and purrfect for me on my return to MGWCC with little hisstory to go by.
Kman23 asks:
I wonder how many “Purr-fect way to start the month!” comments you get…groan
Just yours and Magoo’s, surprisingly. But Jon Delfin liked the puzzle:
It gives one paws.
Lee Sammons says:
Seldom can I write my submission without my cat walking on the keyboard and doing one or more of the hidden sounds.
I’ve got one of those, too.
Archie says the hidden sounds were:
…a liFELINE to those of us needing a correct solution…
OSXpert says:
I was hoping the answer was going to be “Chess” based on the two chess related clues, but no such luck.
And finally, Dan Katz complains:
You finally write a meta about me and you spell my name wrong.
This week’s winner, whose name was chosen randomly from the 446 correct entries received, is Jim Sempsrott of Raleigh, N. Car. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil and notepad set, Jim will also receive a copy of Matt Jones’ new puzzle series, “No Holds Barred Crosswords.” Check out Matt’s Kickstarter campaign here:

CONTEST ALERT:
Neville Fogarty has a contest crossword up at his site today. I plan to crush it this afternoon after posting my own puzzle.
THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:
This week’s contest answer is a necessary but somewhat irritating group of people. Submit your answer in the form on the left sidebar by Tuesday at noon ET. Note: the submissions form disappears from the site promptly at noon on Tuesday.
To print the puzzle out, click on the image below and hit “print” on your browser. To solve using Across Lite either solve on the applet below or download the free software here, then join the Google Group (2,103 members now!) here.
Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
