LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:
Li’l 11×11 grid last week, and we were looking for an 8-letter word. Simple, right? Well it took me as long as any MGWCC I can recall to write, and got a Week 4 number of correct answers, so tough things come in small packages.
Cutting to the chase: the answer was MONOPOLY, and that 11×11 grid is in fact a Monopoly board. Each row and column of the grid contains two entries, and the initials of those clues match those of the corresponding Monopoly space.
For example: the second square down from the upper-left corner in Monopoly is New York Avenue, and the answer there, OHIO, gets an NYA clue: [Neil Young anthem]. The next space down is Tennessee Avenue, whose answer USSR I puckishly clued as [Tereshkova’s abbreviation]. And so on around the board.
Many successful solvers noticed the odd clue for LOIRE at 5-D: [Blois & Orleans’s river]. Why the ampersand? Because we needed it for the B&O Railroad Monopoly space.
Others noted the many clues whose last word started with “A” (the many “Avenues” on the board), or the C and CC clues (Chance and Community Chest). Three of the corners (Free Parking, Go to Jail, and Go) got both an across and down clue, with the GTJ especially standing out. The last corner, In Jail / Just Visiting, is really two separate spaces, so the across took the IJ and the down the JV.
