LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:

mgwcc414

Last week’s MGWCC was as easy as washing your hair:

16-A [How an agitated person gets “worked” (1)] = INTO A LATHER
36-A [ACT Anti-Cavity or Crest Pro-Health (2)] = FLUORIDE RINSE
57-A [Emphasizing words (3)] = LET ME REPEAT

LATHER, RINSE, REPEAT means that our seven-letter word ending in a double letter must be SHAMPOO, found by 483 solvers.

Amy Reynaldo writes:

Man, all those Q’s in a diagonal were a red qerring.

With just three theme entries I wanted to go to town on the grid. You only live once (probably).

Flinty Steve says:

no doubt why you couldn’t use Warren Beatty last week

Raygirl writes:

Your clue for 31A is my new all-time favorite.

Thanks. I can only use Agardian clues on Week 1, since later in the month people might (logically) assume they have something to do with the meta.

My main concern with this puzzle was that I’d receive a bunch of horrific shampoo puns from solvers, but thankfully that didn’t happen. I’ve warned you all repeatedly about sending me these, and finally it’s starting to sink in. Good!

Magoo says:

Hair we go again

Ben Vincent writes:

Tony Antonakas
says:

Head and Shoulders above standard week 1s!

And Ale M found it very easy:

Was this just a conditioner for next week?

This week’s winner, whose name was chosen randomly from the 483 correct entries received, is Anna-Marie Ruoff of Altadena, Calif. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil and notepad set, Anna-Marie will also receive a 1-year subscription to Matt Gaffney’s Daily Crossword (MGDX).

INDIE 500 COMING UP SOON:

The Indie 500 crossword tournament takes place in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, June 4th. I’ll be there, so if you will too please say hello. I went to the inaugural event last year and it was a ton of fun. Highly recommended if you’re anywhere close.

THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:

This week’s contest answer is a six-letter Spanish word familiar to English speakers.

Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
