LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:

In a nutshell: we were looking for a U.S. vice president last week, and the trick to finding him was: there are twelve two-word entries in the grid, and their initials are a letter in the first half of the alphabet followed by its corresponding letter in the second half. So ALPHA NERD for A.N., BE ON for B.O., CAKE PAN for C.P., and so on.

The missing pair of letters is D.Q., leading to contest answer DAN QUAYLE.

This week’s winner, whose name was chosen at random from the 196 correct entries received, is Juanita Fernandez of Vienna, Va. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, Juanita will also receive a copy of Patti Varol’s compilation volume Women of Letters. Next week’s winner will receive the same.

APRIL WINNERS:

Congratulations to the following ten MGWCC winners for April, whose names were chosen at random from among the 134 people who sent in the correct contest answer to each of last month’s four puzzles (SEX AND THE CITY, PHI, OINGO BOINGO, DAN QUAYLE). Each will receive a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set:

Dan Bowden — Sydney, Australia

Zen Dexter — Kellyville, N.S.W., Australia

Jay Giess — Rochester, N.Y.

Alex Jeffrey — Columbia, Md.

Bill Katz — San Rafael, Calif.

Patricia Miga — Colleyville, Tex.

Jason Rau — Los Gatos, Calif.

Chris Stephens — Coralville, Ia.

Mike Utkus — Bala Cynwyd, Penna.

Grant Yang — Clarksburg, Md.

Congratulations to our ten winners, and to everyone who went 4-for-4 in April.

NEW YORKER, NEW YORKER:

This is cool: the New Yorker has just started running a weekly freestyle crossword, the first one of which is by Anna Shechtman. The four other constructors in the rotation will be Patrick Berry, Kameron Austin Collins, Liz Gorski, and Natan Last. That’s a power lineup!

THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:

This week’s contest answer is a living former presidential candidate.

Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
