LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:

Title: “Fifty Sense”
Instructions: This week’s contest answer is a U.S. state.
Answer: ARIZONA

Nobody missed this one! Now that’s a Week 1/5.

Each theme entry ended with the name of a city in the Grand Canyon State:

18-A: [Orange County city (which doesn’t make California the meta answer so don’t submit just yet…)] = COSTA MESA
23-A: [SUV since 2004] = HYUNDAI TUCSON. The first of two Korean cars in this theme.
37-A: [“The Lady in the Lake” novelist, 1943] = RAYMOND CHANDLER
50-A: [Youngest member of a famous group of acting siblings] = SUMMER PHOENIX. Not as well-known as River or Joaquin, but with six letters in her name we’re going with Summer.
59-A: [Minivan with five doors] = KIA SEDONA. Korean car #2.

DIS says:

That was an AZ one.

Amanda Hugginkiss says:

So weird…I’m going to Arizona tomorrow morning!

Kromiumman is already there:

Greetings from Tempe!

Pomona47
says “hold my beer”:

I’ve been to three of those cities just this week!

Rachel Ostrow notes:

It’s a dry heat

Matthew G. writes:

If the winner isn’t from one of the named cities, that will be too bad.

I was hoping for a ‘Zonan winner as well, but the crossword gods did not allow it.

JrMan says:

Thanks for the shout-out to Costa Mesa, where I grew up!

Docison says:

Dave Kingman is still waiting for his shoutout!

Bridget says:

I haven’t entered in sooo long!! 🙂

Welcome back!

And MaineMarge is 1-for-1:

First time with your weekly. I’m a Muggle on new WSJ meta blog.

This week’s winner, whose name was chosen at random from the 655 correct entries received, is Bert Wagner of Vancouver, Wash. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, Bert will also receive a signed copy of my book Pint-Size Crosswords.

SPECIAL PRIZE THIS WEEK AND NEXT:

In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, prizewinners this week and next will also receive a copy of the puzzles from Lollapuzzoola 12, which takes place in Manhattan on Saturday, August 17th. I’m not able to make it this year but I’ve been three times in the past and it’s a blast. Highly recommended if you’re anywhere close.

THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:

This week’s contest answer is a model of automobile.

Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
