Title: “One of These Things Is Not Like the Others”
Prompt: This week’s contest answer is a five-letter word that’s a common first guess in Wordle.
Answer: ADIEU
Correct entries: 585 overall, of which 548 were solo solves
Four ten-letter theme entries in a spiral pattern, each consisting of a pair of five-letter words. And how vowel-rich they were! Clockwise:
17-A: [Recording of someone contacting the dead?] = OUIJA AUDIO
11-D: [Surrounding glows that freak people out?] = EERIE AURAE
55-A: [Swampy region where everyone has a protruding navel?] = OUTIE BAYOU
28-D: [Line of people waiting to purchase a Provencal spread?] = AIOLI QUEUE
And then at 41-D: [What our contest answer means] = GOODBYE
The eight words used in the main theme entries all consist of four vowels and just a single lonely consonant. Can you think of a Wordle-usable word that means “Goodbye”? ADIEU it is (and not ADIOS, since that has two consonants).
Wordle fan mnrgorr is an ADIEU-er:
It’s the one I use every day!!!!!
Same for Amy Reynaldo‘s spousal unit:
That’s Rene’s starting word!
Mikey G. says:
When I left the auction, I bid adieu.
Evan explains:
Me, I always start with TRAIN. No reason, except I tried that and STONE early on. Then a programmer who looked at all the answers ahead of time told me a few months ago that if I wanted to get it right on the first try, I should do TRAIN before STONE, but didn’t tell me when they’d be the answers. So I’m stuck with TRAIN until as early as tomorrow or as late as six years from now.
And finally, Cruise Director says:
Bring on Week 5
Will do…
