LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:
Weird Week 4: solvers were tasked with finding a bird that would’ve made a good sixth theme entry. The first five were:
17-A [One of two in a corner] = BLACK ROOK
25-A [Marmalade base] = BITTER ORANGE
39-A [Burning] = PUTTING A TORCH TO
48-A [Way better now] = MUCH IMPROVED
60-A [Grove product] = MICROCHIP. This Grove.
What’s the connection? Each of those has a shortened form of a familiar animal hidden inside: kangaROO, ORANGutan, alliGATOR, CHIMPanzee, and CROCodile. So we need a bird that has swallowed a shortened animal whole! Sounds impossible! But contest answer WHIPPOORWILL, which has eaten a HIPPO, pulls it off.
This week’s winner, whose name was chosen randomly from the 235 correct entries received, is Bill Glenn of San Francisco, Calif. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil and notepad set, Bill will also receive a 1-year subscription to MGDX.
MONTHLY WINNERS:
The following 10 winners were chosen randomly from among the 126 solvers who sent in the correct contest answer to each of March’s four puzzles (FURNITURE, SHAMROCK SHAKE, MGM GRAND, WHIPPOORWILL).
Greg Anderson — Middleton, Wisc.
Joe Harr — Alexandria, Va.
Alan Kennan — Fort Collins, Colo.
Monica Krausse — El Paso, Tex.
Daniel K. Lee — Los Angeles County, Calif.
L.N.
Scott Rogoff — Mountain View, Calif.
Marcia Rose — Mequon, Wisc.
Seth Tribble — New York City, N.Y.
C.W.
Congratulations to these ten winners, and to everyone who went 4-for-4 in March.
GORDON KICKSTARTER:
In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, winner next week will also receive a subscription to Peter Gordon’s 2016-2017 Fireball Newsflash Crosswords. Whose Kickstarter has 9 days left in it!
THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:
This week’s contest answer is a 9-letter world capital that would’ve made a good seventh theme entry.
Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
