LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:

Title: “I Spy”
Instructions: This week’s contest answer is a well-known book series.
Answer: WHERE’S WALDO?

Week 1 turned out to be a Week 2, so we went back to a Week 1 for Week 2. And a true Week 1 it was, with 638 right answers and just 3 wrong ones.

Our theme entries were:

17-A: [Discuss books with the author of “Brave New World”?] = INTERVIEW ALDOUS. Huxley.

27-A: [Medicine prescribed by doctors on a Japanese island?] = OKINAWA L-DOPA

44-A: [Neglecting to indicate whether you’d like 12 more issues or 24, assuming the magazine already has your recent change of address, et al.?] = RENEWAL DONT’S

58-A: [Salon or the Guardian, for journalist Glenn?] = GREENWALD OUTLET

Each of those conceals a WALDO, leading inevitably to our contest answer. Note that the name sneaks progressively from the first word to the second in each theme entry, as illustrated in the grid at right.

Calhoun says:

Found him!

anjhinz says:

This puzzle was WAY easier than the books

DIS writes:

It was hard to find without the scarf.

Mark G writes:

First time playing in a while. Hopefully I’ll get back in the habit.

And finally, ant says:

47a. Pick out of a crowd: SPOT Nice one! Btw, I never knew this was originally WHERE’S WALLY? in the UK.

You spotted SPOT! And I didn’t know it, either — had always assumed it was American, but author Martin Handford is in fact English (and our Waldo is their Wally).

This week’s winner, whose name was chosen at random from the 638 correct entries received, is Carolyn Lawler of Essex, Mass. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, Carolyn will also receive a signed copy of my book Crosswords for People on the Go.

PATREON UPDATE:

Not quite there yet! Should be ready for public consumption next week. Bear with me, and remember that January is 100% free for all to absorb unforeseen delays like this!

FIREBALL NEWSFLASH KICKSTARTER:

Just 57 hours left to push the great Peter Gordon‘s 2020 Fireball Newsflash Kickstarter over the edge. Just about $1,500 shy at the moment, so go for it!

As a special prize here this week: in addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, next week’s winner will also receive a Fireball Crosswords lanyard and bottle opener! Sweet.

THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:

One letter in this grid must change to another letter to complete the puzzle’s theme. Which letter is it, and what letter does it change to?

Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
