LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:

Title: “Get Ahead of the Curve”
Instructions: This week’s contest answer is a four-letter course you might take at a 45-Across.
Answer: TRIG

Remember your high school trigonometry? Or at least the abbreviations on those calculators? They came in handy last week, when they hid in Dave Sullivan’s four theme entries:

16-A: [Home to Tribeca and Wall Street] = LOWER MANHATTAN
27-A: [“Marie Antoinette, with shoes”] = IMELDA MARCOS. Over 3,000 pairs, if I recall correctly. I own four pairs and one of those I haven’t seen in months so it might actually be three.
45-A: [Pupil’s setting] = PUBLIC SCHOOL
57-A: [Trayed fare?] = PIGS IN A BLANKET. Traditionally found on a tray carried around a catered event.

Just to the left of those four trig abbrs. (TAN, COS, CSC, SIN) you find T, R, I, and G, so if you literally get ahead of those curves (each trig function is a curve when graphed) you’ve found the meta answer. Tangent, cosine, cosecant, and sine, for the record.

Megan Amram correctly notes:

this was a trig question

Thanks for everything, Dave! Nice puzzle! Hope you don’t binge on Triple Sec in celebration! If you do, I’ve got a cot you can lie on for a while!

Sad to hear of Dave’s retirement, I’ve always loved how this site works.

damefox writes:

Love it! A wonderful send-off. Thanks, Dave!

adamrosenfield writes:

Thank you Dave for your years of service, and congratulations on your retirement!

And finally, Meta – World Peace quips:

Nice sine-off, Dave!

And thanks again from me, Webmaster! The MGWCC experience would’ve been much diminished for all without your contributions.

This week’s winner, whose name was chosen at random from the 404 correct entries received, is David Marion of Morgan Hill, Calif. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, David will also receive a signed copy of my book Mental Floss Crunchy Crosswords.

THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:

This week’s contest answer is a well-known movie of the 1990s.

Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
