LAST WEEK’S RESULTS:
Title: “Amphibious Vehicle”
Instructions: This week’s contest answer is a 10-letter animal.
Answer: TIGER SHARK
ONE IF BY / LAND, TWO / IF BY SEA was our “famed military signal” as the clue for 18-, 36-, and 56-Across. Well, why not both? That’s why we have surf ‘n’ turf entrees, after all.
Astute meta-solvers noticed an abundance of animal life throughout the grid, and, nudged by that three-part hint, they classified them into land creatures (1) and sea creatures (2). The 1s, in grid order, are:
TAPIR
IMPALA
GUINEA PIG
EMU
RABBIT
And the sea creatures are:
SCALLOP
HUMPBACK
AHI
RAY
KRILL
The first letters of those give us contest answer TIGER SHARK, whose (1) word is a fittingly a land animal and whose (2) word is suitably a sea creature. Who would mess with something called a “tiger shark”? It’s named after arguably the most badass creature on the land *and* in the sea. The only way you could make it more threatening is to call it a “Falcon Tiger Shark.”
This week’s winner, whose name was chosen at random from the 436 correct entries received, is D.G. In addition to a MGWCC pen, pencil, and notepad set, D.G. will also receive a 1-year subscription to Matt Gaffney’s Daily Crossword.
THIS WEEK’S INSTRUCTIONS:
This week’s contest answer is a five-letter proper noun.
Solve well, and be not led astray by words intended to deceive.
