MGWCC #961 — Saturday, October 31st, 2026 — “Dark Tale”

LAST WEEK’s PUZZLE:

Title: “Sound Logic”
Prompt: Instructions: This puzzle’s contest answer is a well-known scary movie.
Answer: THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, found by 165 solvers, 59 of whom were solo solves

Theme entries for Week 3 of Scary October were as follows:

17-A 1965 Beach Boys hit [food] = BARBARA ANN
23-A: They’re usually salted and smoked [country] = VIRGINIA HAMS
36-A: Pepped up [exclamation] = ADDED SOME ZING TO
46-A: About to [student level] = ON THE VERGE OF
57-A: “Haven’t seen you for a while!” [religion]
= HI STRANGER

Tricky one, and lots of solver never found the in or only found it after much effort.

The idea was to add a certain trio of letters, which turned out to be B-A-A, to a word in the theme entries to get another word. Like so:

ANN + BAA = BANANA
HAMS + BAA = BAHAMAS
ZING + BAA = BAZINGA, an exclamation used by Sheldon on “The Big Bang Theory”
VERGE + BAA = B AVERAGE, tricky!
HI + BAA = BAHAI

So we never heard all these words removed the longer words, and we added BAA to each one, meaning that you might call the non-sound from the original words THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, found by 165 solvers.

sharkcicles says:

BAAAA HUMBUG! (Oh wait that’s for Christmas)

Guffman liked it, I think?

Not D. Not D at all.

And finally, Bird Lives says:

I did this puzzle with fava beans and a nice Chianti. And plenty of help.

Nobody go over to Bird Lives’ house for help on this week’s puzzle! I mean it!!

On to Week 5…
